School

So school... I'm thinking of leaving New Paltz and going to a exclusively online college. I'm hesitant to do it but I think I might have to with gas prices being so hellish. Next semester I will have between 3-4 days which I have to be on campus. I'm expecting between 200 and 300 dollars in gas a month. I'm not sure I can afford to do that. Plus I'm not sure I really want to go back to New Paltz. I didn't do particularly well there academically and while I met some friends I really adore I can see them outside of class.

What I'm really worried about is how that will look on a resume later on. The school is accredited and all but it just seems a bit odd. Then of course there is the whole online aspect which is scary all on its own.

So the plus is easy of access, lower cost, and I can go when I feel like it. Downside is I'm worried about future employment and my ability to actually do the work.

Blegh so what to do?

Have you considered Empire State? They're up around here, but you would only rarely have to go in and its a SUNY school.

In my experience, taking online classes is great. You get to make your own schedule (within the parameters of the class), and so long as you don't let yourself slack off and ignore it for a while, it relieves a lot of the stress related to keeping up with a class on an tight schedule. As far as changing schools, I don't know; I just switched to online classes from the same community college I was already attending.

I've been doing the whole online thing since October and have been having good results with it. We can talk more in depth if you want. It'll have to wait till after I take my finals next week though. I'm taking 3 classes right now and working full time and my head is about to go kerplop.

Couldn't there be something said for a person who enrolls in online class and actually succeeds, at least in the sense of being self-motivated and having good follow-through? I took 1 online class when I was in college and it was really hard to remember on my own that I needed to go in and get work done, not having a teacher looming over me with deadlines. Online schools really involve a lot of self-responsibility, so if you do go with the online option, I'd suggest playing up that angle in job interviews. Employers do often like someone they don't have to baby-sit...
